A Chase for Amenities

In Scott Westerfield’s world of Pretties, everyone can get anything they want, like clothes or skateboards, simply by requesting it from a special wall in their bedroom.

So if I feel like ice skating, “Wall, some skates, please.” Just wait a moment and there they are.

Or say I want to go rock climbing. “Wall, I need a harness,” and I’m on my way.

I’ve been researching apartment amenities a lot lately and when I got to high-end luxury apartments it felt like the world of Pretties already existed. Some of the amenities they offer are nice while others seem a tad ridiculous. So many of these luxury apartments try to apprehend your every need so that life is only as far as your fingertips.

Let’s step over to California. The Greenfield Village Apartments offer a clubroom with a gourmet kitchen. You can also go down to a private tanning salon. Avalon Communities has chalkboard walls. Agave Ridge Townhomes has five sparkling pools. Westpark amenities include a climbing wall and a bocce ball court or if you live in Avino you can rest peacefully knowing that the clubhouse and cyber cafe are solar powered and if your bike breaks down they have a cycle repair shop.

Hop over to Utah and the apartments aren’t quite as extravagant in their amenity offerings, but Eaglewood Lofts has a volleyball court and electric car-charging stations while Serengeti Springs has an African gallery and an academic child care center.

A quick stop in Chicago and you’ll see the K2 building which offers magnified cellular signals to make cell service more reliable.

Now on to Washington, D.C. The 2M NoMa building has a communal English Bulldog that residents can take on walks or to the dog park. Capital Yards has a 10-seat theater and a rooftop pool. Avalon First and M has a pet salon.

As one might expect, there’s some pretty ritzy amenities offered in New York. Related Rentals apartments have valet garages, Assouline culture lounges, children’s playrooms, and landscaped rooftop sun terraces. But at Atelier’s is where you’ll find some of the greatest amenities of them all. Their most expensive penthouse comes with thirteen bathrooms, two Rolls-Royce Phantoms, a million dollar yacht, private chef, and the list goes on. Plus, Atelier’s has an indoor skating rink.

“Wall, I’d like a tub of ice cream and a vodka now.”
