Time to Return

When moving-in landlords will most likely to ask the renter for security deposits. It will help to cover for the cost of damage that a renter has caused to the rental unit, or for cleaning or arrears or any unpaid rent, but always remember that you can get back your security deposits if your lease has been ended or the renters do not want to renew the contract.

But the question is, when is the best time that a security deposit be given back to the renter? How long will it takes before the renter could actually have it?

For every state law, there is specific time as to when the landlord can return the security deposits. Here are the reference guide to know how long security deposits be given back to the renters:

No deadline - Tennessee, West Virginia
A reasonable time - New York
35 days - Alabama
15-60 days - Florida
31 days - Oregon
45 days - District of Columbia, Indiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia.
30 days - Arkansas, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Wyoming.
One month - Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana.
21 days - California, Idaho, Minnesota.
20 days - Delaware, Rhode Island.
14 days the shortest period that you can have your security deposits - Alaska, Arizona,
Hawaii, Nebraska, South Dakota, Vermont,
Washington.

Now renters know until when they can receive their security deposits back.
