I’ve heard the stories - of residents who trash the property, leave it moldy with holes in the wall, the ceiling that caved because of a hoarder in the unit above. These cases are outliers, making up a small percentage of the rental experience, but landlords still cross their fingers that these types of stories never come true for them.
I just came across a story that seems to take the cake. While a trashed apartment is bad news, in this story, the tenant demolished the rental. As in, drive-over-to-the-property-and-the-house-is-no-longer-there demolished.
This unfortunate event happened in Boise, Idaho. The landlord had set up a rental agreement that included plans to sell to the tenant in a year. In the meantime he was going to make improvements on the house. Instead, he completely demolished it, put up some framework, then left town. The landlord is now fighting her insurance company in court to have the demolished property covered.
Now that sounds like a nightmare.
