Hiring a Roofer

While taking a personal finance class, our professor related his experience with hiring a roofer. First, he and his wife realized that they needed to get new shingles on the house sometime during that year. Next, a good sale on shingles came up so they stocked up on what they needed. But where to go from there? They had all these shingles and no professional hired to put them up. Unable to go find a roofing team right then, they simply set the shingles up on the roof for the time being.

“And you wouldn’t believe it,” he said. “Just by having those shingles up there, within one week I had three different roofers come to me and give me their bids. I hardly had to do anything!” He claimed it was the best way he’s ever hired someone to do a job at his house. Here’s what he liked about this method-

  • Didn’t take a lot of effort on his end to find roofers

  • He knew that everyone who came to him was proactive and serious about their business

  • It was easier to negotiate a deal since they had come to him and not the other way around

If you are looking for a team to redo the roof on your property, this is one way you can go about it. Other ideas and options to take into consideration-

  • Talk to other landlords and homeowners for suggestions

  • Look at reviews for the company/team you’re considering

  • Request to see examples of their work

  • Ask if you can call former customers for recommendations and contact ones who had their roofs redone a while ago so you can ask how the work holds up

  • Get the process started several months in advance so that you have time to do the research you need in order to find the best team for a good price
