The Chugly Rental

Can you rent out an ugly rental?

My roommate was the first to visit our current apartment when on the hunt for a new place to live. Her synopsis - We should rent it. It’s charmingly ugly. It’s chugly!

And it is. Our apartment is small, the ceilings are low, and it’s dark because it was built in the seventies when lamps were believed to be the be-all in lighting. But it is charming with its fireplace and cozy feel.

When it comes to an apartment, there is so much more to love than just the apartment itself. I love the location of my apartment - I’m five minutes’ walk from either downtown, the suburbs, or a canyon. Whether I feel like enjoying a day in the city or a day in nature, either option is completely viable. My landlords are fantastic. I’m close to several bus stops and the subway. I also have family and friends that live close by.

There is so much more to an apartment than its looks. At this stage in my life, location and price are more important features of an apartment than visual appeal and size. So for what I need right now, my chugly apartment has it all (aside from light, but we all have to pick our battles).

So can you rent out an ugly rental? For sure! Give it some love and when listing it make sure to point out all of its positive qualities because there’s someone else like me out there looking for that charmingly ugly feel.
