To bring nature closer many of us like to grow plants inside our home. They help to freshen the air and lighten the mood. This invitation to nature does not, however, extend to all the bugs and rodents that would like to come in and share our homes with us also.
So as the weather warms and these bugs come back to life, here is a list of different actions you can take to make your home less inviting for them but still comfortable for you.
Use More Plants
Outside
Lemongrass
Lavendar
Marigolds
Inside
Place crushed mint around your home
Grow basil and rosemary
Natural Remedies
Wipe down kitchen with vinegar once a day
Clear out drains by pouring down baking soda and vinegar, wait five minutes, then pour down boiling pot of water to flush
Sprinkle coffee grounds outside of windows and doors
Seal dry goods away in containers
Place a bay leaf in with dry goods - deters weevils
Combine equal parts of water and vinegar and spray around cracks and holes
Keep It Clean
Sweep and mop often
Clean up piles of clothes and paper
Fix leaking pipes
Vacuum at least once a week
Not ‘Natural’ But Safe
Glue traps
Place steel wool around holes for pipes and outlet coverings
Use low-VOC silicone caulk to seal any holes and cracks that lead into your home. Make sure to check around water pipes and the dryer vent
