Whether winter is coming or has already arrived, here is a checklist to help keep your residents warm and happy, the heating bill low, and your properties protected from potential damage that the cold winter months can cause.
Steps for You
__ Check doors and windows for drafts
__ Check the heating system
__ Gas and oil heating systems - check pilot light and burners
__ Check air ducts to make sure they are clean, well-connected, and well-insulated
__ Replace furnace filters and check every month
__ Turn off and drain outdoor water faucets
__ Insulate exposed pipes
__ Remove window air-conditioners
__ Check roof for weak spots
__ Clean out gutters
__ Rake up the leaves
__ Have sand, salt, and shovels ready

__ Locate source of drafts
__ Use an at-home window insulation kit
__ Make sure vents aren’t blocked by furniture
__ Follow landlord requests, such as to keep faucets dripping in extremely cold weather
