...or at least I need more storage space in my apartment, which I’ve pointed out before in a previous blog. But where to get it? There are several articles on the topic that I’ve read in order to help myself with this issue. Not surprisingly, most of these originate from New York City. But you as the landlord, what can you do to help your renters with storage space?
There is one apartment that sticks out in my mind that was quite ingenious about how to offer more storage with limited square footage. This apartment housed six college students with two bedrooms and one bathroom. Even though this was the most ‘cramped’ setup of all the apartments I lived in during college, we were able to fit all of our stuff in better than in any of my other apartments.
Here’s how they did it-
All of the beds were tall, allowing for under-bed storage
They made sure every resident had a closet of their own
In the shower they placed a long shelf up high, about one foot below the ceiling
There were cupboards and shelves in the bathroom, aside from the vanity
In the laundry room they had extra storage closets we could rent out
Something they didn’t do but I think could be a good idea is have a wall of shelving in the living room.
I realize not all of these ideas will work in regular apartments or outside of student housing. Most bathrooms I can think of would not be able to accommodate extra cupboards and drawers, though that was pretty much the most amazing thing ever. Look over the list and think of what you could add to your apartments to help your residents out. If you have any other ideas about how to add more storage space to your apartments, let us know!
